SCHOOL COUNSELOR (Grades 9-12)
This position is posted in anticipation of vacancies for the upcoming school year.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (knowledge, skills, abilities, duties and responsibilities, physical conditions and nature of work, work environment): Provides educational guidance, personal counseling and serves as a liaison between the home, school and community

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
"Must possess a Master's degree from an accredited college or university and have completed an approved school guidance and counseling program,
"Must possess or be eligible for an endorsement in school counseling with the Virginia Department of Education,
"Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
"Assists with the implementation of state and local testing and provides interpretation of test results in the assessment of individual students,
"Consults with teachers, administrators and pupil personnel staff in order to identify the needs of students and how best to meet the need of each individual student,
"Participates in parent/teacher conferences regarding student's academic program or other concerns as needed,
"Monitors and maintains students' files/records,
"Assists with the educational placement of the students within the school,
"Becomes familiar with community agencies and services available to students and parents,
"Participates in child study/advisory meetings,
"Organizes orientation programs so that a smooth transition occurs between the elementary, and middle school levels of school,
"Conducts counseling sessions with students, individually or in groups,
"Maintains constant contact with the administration regarding student situations in the building,
"Assists in resolving student conflicts and meets one-on-one with students for various personal, academic and family reasons,
"Serves on the Crisis Management Team and assists the principal in emergency situations,
"Performs other duties as assigned by the building principal.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the
use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
