Historical Foodways

This internship was specially developed for students who are interested in researching and learning about colonial foodways – the growing, storing, and preparation of food during the colonial period. Most of the focus will be at Jamestown Settlement’s James Fort, with interns learning the history of culinary arts in early American history, interpretive skills, and providing cooking demonstrations for visitors. This internship will be supplemented by independent research on the subject with the possibility of one foodways class being offered at American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Research completed by interns may be used in future Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Training Academy classes.

Museum Operations and Education: Museum Education Services, Interpretive Services.

This internship will be supervised by our Acting Interpretive Site Manager and the Acting Assistant Interpretive Site Manager, both of whom have personal interest and years of experience on the research of colonial foodways.

Good public contact skills and the desire to learn. Must be able to tolerate all weather conditions, smoke from fires, and frequent encounters with insects and/or small wildlife. Must be able to wear period costume. Interns may work in costume at Jamestown Settlement in James Fort (after completing the initial training courses and shadowing a mentor) and will therefore need to be available to work in this position two to three days a week. Students may also be required to complete subject specific research and assist with educational program development.
