Mechanical Engineering Intern

Founded in 1969, Environmental Tectonics Corporation (‘”ETC”) designs, manufactures, and sells software-driven products and services used to recreate and monitor the physiological effects of motion on humans, and equipment to control, modify, simulate and measure environmental conditions. Our products include aircrew training systems (aeromedical, tactical combat, and general), disaster management systems, sterilizers (steam and gas), environmental testing and simulation systems, and other products that involve similar manufacturing techniques and engineering technologies. ETC’s unique ability to offer complete systems (hardware, electrical, and software), designed and produced to high technical standards, sets it apart from its competition. For more information about ETC, visit www.etcusa.com.

At ETC, you will use your skills and talents to build one-of-a-kind, leading-edge technology including simulators for aviation and space pilots and crew, disaster management systems (command and vehicle), environmental test equipment for the world's leading automotive companies, and large steam and EO sterilization systems for a variety of markets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, machinists, and technicians to design state-of-the-art devices for the above-mentioned business units.
  • Apply knowledge, principles, and best practices of mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering to design components and sub-assemblies under the guidance of engineers with decades of experience while adhering to stakeholder design requirements, quality and regulatory standards, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards, in-house and external manufacturing limitations, vendor restrictions, and production deadlines.
  • Utilize Autodesk Inventor to create 3D parts, assemblies, and engineering drawings of parts and sub-assemblies pertinent to the design, analysis, and production of devices.
  • Use Autodesk AutoCAD to create engineering drawings/schematics of pneumatic and hydraulic systems (P&ID diagrams) as well as the block libraries needed to support them.
  • Identify and document problems with existing designs, leverage analytical skills and tools to determine, recommend, document, and implement approved changes.
  • Coordinate and interface with project managers, vendors, and machinists to evaluate, purchase, and ensure timely delivery of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts.
  • Interface with shop floor technicians to answer questions regarding the manufacturing, assembly, and bench testing of various components and sub-systems.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers to investigate and solve issues found during acceptance tests via the collection, organization, post-processing, and evaluation of empirical data sets.

Recommended Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BS Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Demonstrated interest and excellence in machine design and manufacturing via some combination of academic courses, design projects, hobbies, and membership in clubs that frequently require the employ of applicable skills (e.g., Formula SAE, Robotics, etc.).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent time management, planning, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong logical thinking and problem-solving skills — able to break down a workflow, identify bottlenecks, and develop methods and tools to mitigate them.
  • Strong understanding of data management principles, including data integrity, naming conventions, and metadata standards.
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems as well as associated machining, welding, fabrication, assembly, and documentation practices.
  • Demonstrated programming ability with practical experience in programming languages like Python, VB.NET/C#, VBA, SQL, PowerShell, and SDK/API frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Vault, and Content Center or equivalent software, including working knowledge of assemblies and part libraries.
  • Ability to read, understand, and create/draft engineering drawings compliant with common geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) standards. Knowledge of P&ID helpful.
  • Experience with Autodesk Vault Professional or a similar PDM/PLM platform, including lifecycle management, permissions, and automation.
