JOB TITLE: Plastics Engineering R&D Intern

REPORTS TO: Application Development Engineer
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt
SALARY GRADE/LEVEL/RANGE: Hourly
SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: Assist in all aspects of research and development. Provide support to application development engineers and R&D operations team on programs that will accelerate Bixby’s growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct mechanical properties testing of materials to include tensile, flexural, impact, scratch, mar, peel adhesion etc.
- Conduct additional polymer characterization such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and melt flow rate (MFI)
- Create multilayer prototype constructions using benchtop pneumatic presses.
- Assist R&D Operations team in creating sheet extrusion prototypes to include drying, set-up, tear down, processing, material handling, and shipping.
- Work with Application Development Engineers on testing, research, and data analysis to accelerate Bixby development program growth.
- Compile data in central lab management system and take an analytical approach to interpretating results.
COMPETENCY:
- Mechanically or analytically inclined, preferably with knowledge of plastics processing, materials, design, and testing.
- Excellent organization/multitasking, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize, organize, and follow through on multiple tasks.
- Ability to interact with development personnel, engineers, and other departments to ensure complete customer satisfaction and timely response.
- Must be self-motivated and detail oriented.
- Ability to learn and work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, client-oriented environment

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

TRAVEL: None, with occasional opportunities for day-trip travel locally.
EDUCATION: Actively working towards a Bachelor of Science in Plastics Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related discipline.
EXPERIENCE: This is an entry-level role with no experience required. Exposure to plastics materials and processing in academic or industry setting preferred.
