Position Overview:

The Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro (BGCSL) is seeking a motivated, energetic, and team-oriented Youth Development Professional (YDP) to lead our Sports & Recreation programs at the Teen Clubhouse. This role involves creating a fun, safe, and engaging environment for teenagers (ages 14-18), with a focus on teaching the fundamentals of various sports through structured lesson plans. The YDP will also play a crucial role in maintaining program quality, interacting positively with parents and teens, and ensuring the smooth operation of the Teen Clubhouse programs.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

Lead Sports & Recreation Activities:

• Conduct engaging and safe weekly sports activities, teaching the fundamentals of various sports through dynamic and game-filled lesson plans.
• Encourage teamwork, sportsmanship, and the development of new skills among participants.

Program Preparation and Cleanup:

• Set up and organize sports and recreation equipment before each session, ensuring all materials are properly stored and maintained after use.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization in the Teen Clubhouse, contributing to a safe and welcoming environment.

Engagement and Interaction:

Interact positively with teens and parents, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating enthusiasm, professionalism, and a commitment to the development of each participant.

Safety and Supervision:

• Ensure a safe program environment by supervising Club Members, administering first aid as necessary, and managing any emergencies in accordance with BGCSL policies.
• Monitor participant behavior, enforcing rules, and maintaining a respectful and cooperative environment.

Program Leadership:

• Lead and supervise games and tournaments at the Teen Clubhouse, including creating scorecards, managing participant conduct, and helping organize tournaments.
• Collaborate in the planning and implementation of other Teen Clubhouse programs, special events, or classes as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

• 1 year of experience working with teens is required; in a sports setting, day camp, after-school program, youth program, or summer camp is preferred.
• Reliability. Consistency is key for relationship development.
• Clubhouse Programming: Programs generally occur between 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. on the same day each week for a 10 to 14-week period. Workshops typically last for 1 to 1.5 hours, with some programs offering back-to-back sessions.
• School-Year Hours: Regular hours are from 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., with some additional evening and weekend shifts.
• Summer Hours: Hours increase during the summer, with operations running from 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., plus some evening and weekend shifts.
• Minimum of 24 years old.
• Degree Preferred: Exercise science, Exercise physiology., Athletic training., Physical therapy, kinesiology, Phys Ed, sports management, etc.
• Familiarity with various sports and recreation activities, including basic knowledge of rules and preparation, is preferred and background playing a variety of team and solo sports in an amateur to professional setting highly desired.

• Program Management: Capable of handling multiple tasks, prioritizing responsibilities, and providing reliable support to program areas.
• Risk Management: Knowledge of program risk management and safe work practices, with the ability to apply these concepts effectively in daily operations.
• Relationship Builder: Ability to establish authentic relationships and positive connections with teens, peers, and leadership

Communication- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with program participants, co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

High emotional intelligence (EQ), can “read the room”, and gain the trust and confidence or a diverse group of teens.

Safety and Security - Observes safety and security procedures; Determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; Reports potentially unsafe conditions; Uses equipment and materials properly. Can identify and predict potential hazards and works with stakeholders to implement solutions.
