Lighting Specification Specialist

Lighting Specification Specialist | Associate Level

Spectrum Lighting | San Antonio, Texas | Full Time | Associate Level

Turn your technical skills into a career shaping real-world spaces through design, collaboration, and hands-on projects

Spectrum Lighting is looking for an associate-level Lighting Specification Specialist to support our specification team while developing the technical, product, and relationship-building skills needed to advance into an outside specification role.

This opportunity is well suited for students and recent graduates who are comfortable working with construction plans, one-line diagrams, technical drawings, and specifications but may be interested in a career beyond a traditional engineering role.

You will work alongside experienced specification professionals, assisting with product research, project documentation, fixture selections, and lighting layouts. As your knowledge and confidence grow, you will begin meeting with engineers, architects, designers, and end users to present solutions and build industry relationships.

No lighting experience is required. We will teach you the products, software, design process, and commercial skills needed to succeed.

Why This Opportunity Is Different

Your technical education can lead to more than one kind of career. This position brings together technical problem-solving, design, communication, and business development.

You will use your ability to interpret plans and technical information while learning how lighting decisions affect energy use, building performance, architecture, and the experience of a space.

You will also have a defined path forward. The goal is to develop you into an Outside Specification Specialist who can confidently advise customers, present lighting solutions, and help influence the products selected for commercial projects.

What You Will Learn

  • Understand commercial lighting products, applications, and controls
  • Read architectural and electrical plans, one-line diagrams, and specifications
  • Select lighting products based on performance, appearance, efficiency, and budget
  • Assist with lighting layouts, calculations, and design recommendations
  • Navigate energy codes, industry standards, and project requirements
  • Prepare fixture schedules, technical documentation, and product comparisons
  • Present lighting and controls solutions clearly and confidently
  • Follow commercial projects from early design through construction
  • Build relationships with engineers, architects, designers, and end users

What You Will Do

Initially, you will:

  • Support the specification team with product research and project documentation
  • Review drawings and specifications to identify project requirements
  • Assist with fixture selections, lighting layouts, and design presentations
  • Prepare fixture schedules, product comparisons, and technical information
  • Coordinate project information with manufacturers and internal teams
  • Attend product training sessions and industry events
  • Participate in customer meetings and presentations with experienced team members
  • Maintain accurate project and customer information in the CRM

As you develop, you will begin to:

  • Present lighting and controls solutions to engineering and architectural firms
  • Build relationships with engineers, architects, designers, and building owners
  • Help customers select products for commercial projects
  • Conduct product demonstrations, training sessions, and presentations
  • Identify new projects and specification opportunities
  • Represent Spectrum Lighting within the local design and construction community

What Success Looks Like

You are curious and willing to ask questions. You can understand a technical concept, recognize why it matters, and explain it clearly to someone else.

You follow through, pay attention to details, and enjoy working with different types of people. Over time, you become a trusted resource who understands both the technical requirements of a project and the goals of the customer.

What We Are Looking For

The right candidate:

  • Is pursuing or has recently completed a degree in electrical engineering, architectural engineering, construction science, or a related technical field
  • Is comfortable reading plans, one-line diagrams, technical drawings, or specifications
  • Wants to apply technical skills in a collaborative, customer-facing business environment
  • Communicates clearly and is interested in developing presentation skills
  • Enjoys solving problems and learning new technology
  • Is organized, dependable, and attentive to detail
  • Is interested in architecture, construction, lighting, controls, or building systems
  • Takes initiative and responds well to coaching
  • Can work independently while contributing to a team
  • Has a valid Texas driver license and reliable transportation

Previous sales, lighting, or construction experience is not required.
