Unit Overview

• The Bronson Birthplace in Battle Creek features:
• 15 beds, including 11 LDRP rooms and 4 antepartum/post‑op rooms
• 2 operating rooms
• 3 triage bays
• A newborn nursery
• RNs on this unit care for pregnant, laboring and postpartum patients, as well as healthy newborns. Cross‑training opportunities include labor and delivery, OR procedures, postpartum care and nursery care.

Role Overview

Under general supervision and in accordance with organizational policies and the Michigan Public Health Code, the RN manages patient care throughout the hospital stay. Responsibilities include assessment, planning, diagnosis, implementation and evaluation of care; coordination with interdisciplinary teams; delegation to support staff; and thorough documentation of patient status and needs.

Direct patient care employees must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Education & Licensure

• Associate’s degree in Nursing required
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred; must obtain within 8 years of hire
• Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing in the state of Michigan
• BLS certification required by completion of core orientation
• Additional certifications may be required based on unit (critical care, ALS, etc.)
• Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (PQF or NCC) required within 6 months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring

Key Responsibilities

Standards of Practice

• Collect comprehensive patient data and assess physical and developmental needs
• Analyze assessment data to identify patient problems and confirm with patient/family
• Document expected outcomes and develop individualized plans of care
• Implement interventions, administer medications and maintain patient comfort and safety
• Initiate and coordinate patient education plans
• Evaluate patient progress toward expected outcomes and document responses

Professional Performance

• Participate in quality improvement activities
• Maintain competency through ongoing education
• Provide culturally sensitive, age‑appropriate care
• Engage in self‑evaluation and peer review
• Support a healthy, collaborative work environment
• Advocate for patients and uphold ethical standards

• Delegate tasks appropriately based on patient needs and staff competencies

Scrub RN Responsibilities (as applicable)

• Review procedure cards and ensure required supplies and equipment are available
• Anticipate surgeon needs based on procedure knowledge
• Monitor patient condition for changes during procedures
• Update preference cards and report equipment issues
• Serve as a resource for circulators unfamiliar with specialty equipment or implants
• Participate in after‑hours call rotation
• Perform scrub duties across multiple specialties

Additional Requirements & Working Conditions

• Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from clinical systems and equipment
• Ability to communicate clearly verbally, in writing and electronically
• Frequent computer work requiring sustained concentration
• Regular lifting up to 50 pounds and assisting with heavier tasks

Additional Notes (Site‑Specific)

• Swing Bed training required for Bronson LakeView and Bronson South Haven
• Staff may be asked to cover shifts at LakeView or South Haven based on patient acuity and staffing needs
• Virtual RN responsibilities may apply, including remote patient assessments, education, discharge planning and collaboration with bedside teams
