AFTER SCHOOL

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Program Assistant (Camp Counselor)

REPORTS TO: Site Coordinator/Lead Teacher as directed

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part Time/Seasonal, Non-Exempt

Under the supervision of the Site Coordinator, counselors will provide quality care including assistance & encouragement and appropriate discipline & redirection. As a role model, counselors will strive to build friendships with children and their parents as well as continuously set a positive example for children in our care. When Site Coordinator is off site, Counselors report to Lead Teachers.

Qualifications:

  • Be of good character
  • Demonstrate the understanding, ability, personality, and physical health to meet the cultural, emotional, physical, and social needs of all children in care
  • Experience preferred, not required

State Licensed Lead Teacher Requirements (DCYF):

  • 16 years of age or older
  • TB Test
  • Portable Background Check
  • CPR & First Aid
  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Food Handler Card
  • Childcare Basics
  • Families experiencing homelessness
  • Natural Disaster
  • Mandated Reporter
  • Medication Management

Primary Duties (but are not limited to):

  • Supervision and interaction with children in a positive and caring way
  • Ensure required daily sign in/sign out + snack count procedures
  • Compliance with federal and state code procedures

(i.e. disinfecting & sanitizing tables, personal hand washing, etc.)

  • Snack service
  • Organization and storage of toys & materials to ensure order and safety.
  • Model and assist children in developing appropriate social skills and problem-solving techniques.
  • Assist with homework/reading and in maintaining a fun, nurturing environment in which everyone feels valued.
  • Communicating openly with Site Coordinator and Program Director.
  • Meeting standards of cleanliness & safety.
  • Greeting each child each day & have a genuine conversation with each child at least once a week.
  • Performing first aid and/or CPR as required.
  • Asking to see identification from any parent/pick up person you don’t recognize.

Expectations:

  • Be on time and ready to work every day at your scheduled time unless Site Coordinator specifies differently.
  • Access your personal cell phone only during breaks or lunch break.
  • Position yourself in an area that makes it easy for you to scan the entire group.
  • Feel free to interact with a few children at a time but scan the area regularly to check on the entire group.
  • Seek opportunities to engage with campers and assist staff in performing tasks proactively - rather than waiting to be asked.
  • Space yourself away from staff and other volunteers for effective supervision
  • Be aware of routines so all staff and volunteers may “speak with one voice.”
  • Inform Site Coordinator of challenging behavior or problems with children so the challenges may be addressed by the Site Coordinator or Program Director.
  • Help every child with special projects. Answer questions and assure that every child has a positive experience.
  • If you are sick, or otherwise unable to come to work, inform the Program Director as soon as possible so that we can find a sub for you.
  • Put in leave requests for non-emergency days off 2 weeks in advance
  • Always speak and act with kindness toward campers and staff.
  • Check it at the door – If you are having a bad day, leave the issues that are outside of program outside of program.

HOURS Needed to be available:

M, T, Th, F- 2:15-5:30

Wednesdays 1:15-5:30
