Technical Designer
Purpose of Position
The Technical Designer will play a key role in bridging the design and production teams by ensuring the technical execution of Johnny Was' designs is accurate, efficient, and aligned with our high-quality standards. This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to interpret design concepts into technical specifications, and the skills to ensure that products are produced to the correct fit, quality, and cost parameters.
Job Description
Essential Job Functions
- Interpret design team sketches and inspiration into accurate, detailed tech packs, ensuring attention to fit, fabric, construction, specifications, and trims.
- Lead and conduct fit sessions to evaluate garment construction and silhouette.
- Provide detailed callouts and critiques during fittings to identify issues and propose actionable solutions.
- Effectively communicate fit comments to overseas vendors, including:
- Thorough written instructions to address fit and quality concerns.
- Annotated photos highlighting areas for correction.
- Updated technical sketches and construction details.
- Revised garment measurements and specifications.
- Issue grading guidelines post-fit approval to maintain consistency throughout the production process.
- Manage and track the development calendar to ensure sample and delivery timelines are met.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with design, production, and management to resolve issues and align on deliverables.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

- Experienced professional who typically performs moderately complex to complex work.
- Utilizes creative and/or technical skills, knowledge, etc. to complete the assigned work.
- Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction from the manager.
- Prioritizes workload based on knowledge of calendar deliverables and deadlines.
Education and Certifications, Experience and Skills, and Competencies
- Degree in Fashion Design, Apparel Technology, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of experience in a Technical Design or related role within the fashion industry.
- Strong knowledge of garment construction, fit standards, and fabrication.
- Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), and Windows OS.
- Experience with PLM systems and Gerber patternmaking software is a plus.
- Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Preferred Skills:
- Experience working with overseas factories and international production timelines.
- Experience with sustainable fashion or knowledge of sustainable materials and processes.
Pay is based on multiple factors, such as qualifications/skills/experience, geography, and state and local wage laws. In addition, bonus and/or commission and benefits including healthcare, retirement savings, paid time off/vacation, and product discounts may be offered.
Range for the position is $69K - 100K
